Resolve or suppress all clippy warnings

Right now, cargo clippy --all-features produces over 2000 lines of output. I'd like to cut that down, to increase our odds of clippy spotting real bugs.

With your approval, @Diziet, I'm planning to go one lint at a time, and make a few MR branches to resolve them. I'll start with the ones I think will be uncontroversial.
