I even checked the signature to be completely sure it's not something weird going on there, but it's fine.
I installed it properly on my desktop and all is well, but when I try to start it by double-clicking "Start Tor Browser" all that happens is that the loading indicator next to the mouse starts spinning and two new processes are started, tor.exe and firefox.exe. I have re-installed it several times, I even tried it on a USB stick but it doesn't work.
Sometimes a window appears that says "Wating for Tor to start" but it never changes no matter how long you wait. I also get an error message saying "could not connect to tor control port".
I googled this and it said to try to turn off your firewall and/or anit-virus program and try again, I did and it still didn't work.
This is rare though, most of the time a window never appears at all.
Any clues?

FWIW, the `Preferences > Advanced > Offline Web Content and User Data > Tell me when a website asks to store data for offline use` checkbox is checked. However that setting only toggles the `browser.offline-apps.notify` pref. I think what we want is `browser.cache.offline.enable=true`, but we'd likely need to audit those APIs to ensure they do not do anything potentially unsafe.https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser/-/issues/15289Tor Browser doesn't close/exit correctly2022-06-15T02:44:20ZTracTor Browser doesn't close/exit correctlyTor Browser (4.0.4) is showing inconsistent and faulty behavior for me when I try to close it. When I close the browser, the window disappears like expected, but the process isn't terminated, it just keeps running (although not recognizable unless I start Tor Browser from the terminal).
If I then later (in the same desktop session) want to open Tor Browser again, I get the "Firefox is already running" error popup.
After restarting the computer, when I start Tor Browser, it opens normally but then, instead of a blank tab, shows this error page:
Well, this is embarrassing.
Tor Browser is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.
and offering to restore the last tab from my previous session.
This happens most, but not all of the time when I close the browser, and I haven't really been able to work out under what conditions it will work normally or fail like this. (Also not by starting it from a terminal with `--debug`.)
Also, apart from this (after I click "Close" for the "restore my previous session" suggestion, or after I manually kill the still running process), everything seems to work fine. But it's still annoying.

One user reported that switching to the alpha version of TBB resolved the issue. ~~The second user reported that it didn't.~~
The second user verified that the browser does correctly report *invalid* certificates, using badssl.com.
The second user was able to fix it with a clean profile. (Update: a clean profile *on alpha*. Still broken on 10.0.10)

15:40 < rany> Hi, I'm having an issue right now with Tor Browser reporting all HTTPS
connections as insecure. This happened after the update to 10.0.10
15:43 < rany> screenshot: https://0x0.st/-HNT.png
16:47 < jnewsome> rany: what does it say if you click on the right-arrow next to
"connection not secure"?
16:50 < rany> https://0x0.st/-Hqs.png
16:53 < jnewsome> strange. someone reported a similar problem yesterday; I think they
ultimately worked around it by installing the alpha version of the tor
browser
16:53 < rany> and https://0x0.st/-Hqz.png
16:53 < rany> hmm, well it's not bothering too much but i wanted to check if its
intentional cuz i can't find anything in the change log
16:53 < jnewsome> thank you for the screenshots; I wasn't able to get detailed info from
the reporter yesterday
16:54 < rany> so not all TB users have this issue?
16:54 < jnewsome> nope; I'm on the same version and not experiencing that problem
16:55 < jnewsome> is this linux?
16:55 < rany> yes
16:55 < jnewsome> I would be careful about using the browser in this state; you might not
detect a man-in-the-middle attack
16:56 < rany> I'll try the alpha version of TB and check if that fixes it
16:56 < rany> yeah, good point
16:58 < rany> tor browser alpha doesn't fix it for me :/
16:59 < jnewsome> I wonder if this could be an actual attack. Could you try requesting a
few circuits and see if it works for any of them?
17:01 < rany> i've tried a ton of circuits and so far they all have the issue ... so
probably unlikely
17:01 < rany> also bad SSL certificates still get detected fine ... just tried from
badssl.com
17:02 < rany> so it seems like verification is working all right
...
17:25 < rany> though TB works fine with a clean profile
17:26 < rany> not sure why the update broke my old profile
...
17:36 < rany> nevermind, i just got the same issue even with a clean profile
17:36 < rany> /shrug
17:36 < rany> (but that's on stable TB )

I am using OSX 10.8.5 - Mountain Lion (not Mavericks for performance reasons) with my OSX firewall on AND with Sophos antivirus 9.0.8. I do not want to relax these settings for security reasons.
I am successfully playing with Vidalia 0.2.21 & TOR 0.2.4.9-alpha (git-23dd7c901287d7d8) Qt 4.8.1 (TorBrowser-2.4.9-alpha-1-osx-i386-en-US.zip) -- which DOES work. This is the old version with separate Vidalia and the old Firefox browser.
However, when today I installed the CURRENT version of TOR (TorBrowserBundle-3.5.3-osx32_en-US.zip), it would not work. The TorButton onion turns green but I am not actually making any kind of network connection:

- If not, are they able to find alternative download methods in a censored context?
*Once users have found the Tor Browser download page:*
- Are they able to download Tor Browser for their device?
- What do users on PCs do?
- Do users understand how to download the correct file for their device?
- What do users on Android phones do?
- What do users on iPhones do?
*Once users have downloaded Tor Browser:*
- Are they able to verify their Tor Browser download to ensure that their download has not been tampered with?
- Are they able to install Tor Browser successfully?

[0xPoly reported](https://twitter.com/0xPoly/status/539475293141233664) that the true DPI size can be inferred via such a mechanism, and provided the following [example PoC](http://jsfiddle.net/4w8cuvet/):
page.html:
```
<div id='testdiv' style='height: 1in; left: -100%; position: absolute; top: -100%; width: 1in;'></div>
```
page.js:
```
var devicePixelRatio = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;
dpi_x = document.getElementById('testdiv').offsetWidth * devicePixelRatio;
dpi_y = document.getElementById('testdiv').offsetHeight * devicePixelRatio;
alert(dpi_x);
```
In Tor Browser, even on high-density displays, [the DPI is correctly spoofed](https://twitter.com/petertoddbtc/status/539505134980849664) to 96x96, and the above code does `alert('96')`. However, if the user changes the zoom level, i.e. via Ctrl-+ or Ctrl--, then the above Javascript will detect a non-96x96 DPI. When I tested (on a machine with a 96x96 DPI display), zooming once led to `alert('115.20000457763672')`, however that `'115.20000457763672'` stayed the same if I scaled the browser window size differently and reloaded the page (keeping the zoom at the same level). [Peter Todd reported](https://twitter.com/petertoddbtc/status/539505134980849664) that detecting the zoom level also works on a high-density display.
This may particularly be a problem on huge displays, or any other displays probably viewed from a greater-than-arms-length distance, where the users are constantly zooming in.

when I click "New Identity". After restarting, the Browser is then completely reset every time.
Seems to be a problem of writing to harddisk (occured never before). I checked my write permissions for the whole tor folder, seems o.k. to me.
Any idea what else might cause this behaviour?
thank you very much in advance,
Lara
