Mostly, this is based on $5 being common in app stores (such as google play, apple app store, amazon app store) conditioning users to spend $5 for an app. Other studies say optimal price is $1.99.
The only way to truly learn the optimal price ($ donated vs. downloads) is to experiment.Website Donations EnhancementAndrew LewmanAndrew Lewmanhttps://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/10473Integrate our opencrm system with donation/thank you pages2020-06-13T17:21:35ZAndrew LewmanIntegrate our opencrm system with donation/thank you pagesWe need to start keeping in touch with our donors now that we have a few thousand of them. Step 1 ...We need to start keeping in touch with our donors now that we have a few thousand of them. Much like the EFF and FSF, we should integrate our opencrm system into the donation/thank you page to better communicate with our donors.
Step 1 is to get the opencrm system integrated into the rest of operations.
Step 2 is to tune it for the load it may take
Step 3 is to figure out the workflow from donate through crm registration
Step 4 is to push it liveWebsiteV3https://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/10553Show Wikipedia-like donation banner on homepage2020-06-13T17:21:40ZTracShow Wikipedia-like donation banner on homepageWikipedia uses banners with an appeal to donate at the top of the page to raise money. Instead of / in addition to a generic "we need money to run this service", it could display (an excerpt of) a story from a Tor user or developer. "Tor has saved my life while I was in Syria", "I am working on Tor because...", and so on.
We could also add those stories on the donation page itself (maybe in a box with the stories sliding through, like this image gallery: http://foundation.zurb.com/docs/components/orbit.html)
This is somewhat related to #10264 (Ticket).
This Idea came up in the workshop "How you can help Tor" during 30c3.

Such a campaign would work on getting funding for a specific new Feature for the Tor Project, be it a new website, specific enhancements to the TBB or Tor, or other things.
It would require:
1. People to organize it
2. A specific goal (and comprehensible description of the relevance of that goal) and a price tag for that goal
3. Pledge tiers (Stickers, Shirts, ...?)
4. ...?
An example for what a basic crowdfunding could look like would be the GnuPG crowdfunding drive: http://goteo.org/project/gnupg-new-website-and-infrastructure
I would propose to use this ticket for discussion on the topic, and, once a consensus has been reached, to create new tickets for the individual tasks associated with a crowdfunding drive.

1. move the donations button closer to the download button.
2. Rework the page so the donations button is first, with a nice reason why donations are needed, but clearly state downloads are still free, and click the download button to skip a donation process
3. Change the page flow so that downloads go to a donation request page first, and then after 10 seconds of no action, redirect to the download-easy page.WebsiteV3https://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/11775Redesign donations page to fit more payment options2020-06-13T17:22:09ZAndrew LewmanRedesign donations page to fit more payment optionsOur donations page is getting long and confusing. It might be fun and helpful to users to make it look stylistically similar to the crowdfunding page. Ideally we would translate the banner to several languages.
The next Tor Browser release is December 15, so we should aim for then at the very latest.Arthur EdelsteinArthur Edelsteinhttps://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/17566Encode crowdfunding pages for translation2020-06-13T17:23:22ZArthur EdelsteinEncode crowdfunding pages for translationWe use Transifex to translate torbutton, etc, so it should be possible to get our crowdfunding pages translated the same way.We use Transifex to translate torbutton, etc, so it should be possible to get our crowdfunding pages translated the same way.Arthur EdelsteinArthur Edelsteinhttps://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/17770Buttons on donation banner on about:tor are misaligned sometimes2020-06-15T23:31:43ZGeorg KoppenButtons on donation banner on about:tor are misaligned sometimesAttached is a screen shot I took showing the donation banner with Laura Poitras and the new about:tor lookout for the alpha releases. 1) The buttons on the banner are not properly aligned.
2) While testing not only clicking on the buttons led to the donation page but this happened as well if I clicked somewhere on the banner and even if I clicked somewhere outside of it next to it. While I could live with the second case (although I think we should only go to the donation page if one clicks on the buttons) I am against the behavior in the third case: if one is not clicking on the buttons (banner) one does probably not want to donate and we should respect that.
2a) Probably related there is a little area on the left side next to the banner which seems to have focus as well.https://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/17792Donation banner translations2020-06-15T23:31:45ZArthur EdelsteinDonation banner translationsTransifex has translated the donation banner to many languages. If we want to include the donation banner in some of these locales, we will need to explicitly activate those locales in the donation banner code. And we will need to adjust the text size and/or layout to accommodate the variation in text length between languages. Which languages should we include?
Finally, we will need to import the latest translations from Transifex before building TBB.https://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/17816Buttons on Laura's donation banner are not properly aligned in stable series2020-06-15T23:31:47ZGeorg KoppenButtons on Laura's donation banner are not properly aligned in stable seriesSee attached screen shot.
