I was running Orbot through a vpn and using fire.onion and it used to work but now usually it will say not connected to tor when I check it at check.torproject.org. And sometimes it will be sending and receiving but usually everything is at 0. So I downloaded Orfox and tried running Orbot, and it says connected to Tor when I check it, although it still isn't showing much sending or receiving activity. And in the first few minutes that I check if I'm connected at check.torproject.org, it always shows my original IP address despite saying I'm connected and despite when I look up my ip address elsewhere i see the ip address of my vpn.
Yesterday when I was looking at the Orbot app, the onion icon was flipping on and off on its own and it kept doing this. Also Orbot started up by itself this morning. So I unselected allow background starts, although it should not be doing this even with it selected bc I dont run other apps through it (other than fire.onion and orfox), and I had choose for it to run for all apps at start-up. My email address is lilypatterson47@gmail.com if you have any questions or answers. Thanks

We asked Michael Rogers from the Briar Project to review this proposal, since his team has done the most with HS on mobile. The PR details and his comments are inline below.
While these improvements seem worthwhile from a usability perspective, there are concerns about impact on anonymity, as always.
****
The issue at the moment is that while the device is sleeping for long
periods of time, it is possible for the HS to become unreachable as a
result of Tor detecting a clock jump of length greater than
`NUM_JUMPED_SECONDS_BEFORE_WARN` (100 seconds) upon waking up, which
then closes all circuits. Another issue is that if the device was woken
up by incoming network traffic, the device only stays awake for about a
second before going back to sleep, which isn't enough time for Tor to
rebuild the intro circuits, and thus the HS is no longer reachable until
Tor is able to rebuild the circuits.
I attempt to improve this situation in two ways:
1. Increase `NUM_JUMPED_SECONDS_BEFORE_WARN` from 100 seconds to 600
seconds to avoid triggering the clock-jumped-close-all-circuits code
every time the device wakes up from sleep.
2. Add a new command (`MARKCONNFORWAKELOCK`) and event (`WAKELOCK`) to
the control port to allow Tor to synchronously signal Orbot to hold wake
lock on behalf of Tor (since it isn't possible to hold a wake lock from
native code). A wake lock is acquired at the start of a event callback,
then released when libevent returns from its event loop when there are
no active events. This prevents the device from sleeping when Tor still
has work to do.

Thanks for passing this on. I've also been looking into this problem

Is there something that makes 600 seconds qualitatively better than 100
seconds, or is this just a workaround for short sleeps?
2. Add a new command (`MARKCONNFORWAKELOCK`) and event (`WAKELOCK`) to
the control port to allow Tor to synchronously signal Orbot to hold wake

I like the underlying idea here, but this way of implementing it seems
risky.
The problem is that Tor is driven by two kinds of events: incoming
network traffic and libevent timers. When the device is asleep, incoming
traffic will briefly wake it, so you can grab a wake lock until Tor
finishes its work. But if a libevent timer expires during sleep, the
device won't be woken. The timer will be handled next time the device
wakes for some other reason.
I think this is a potential risk to anonymity, because it will result in
externally visible behaviour, such as circuit teardowns, happening in
correlated bursts when the device wakes up. And those bursts can be
triggered by sending traffic to the device.
Tor expects timers to run at the scheduled time. That's why it panics
and tears everything down if the clock jumps by 100 seconds. Suppressing
that panic response seems like a bad idea. More generally, ignoring the
assumption behind the panic response seems like a bad idea.
What would be a better idea?
Briar holds a wake lock whenever Tor is connected to the network, but
that kills the battery, so we have to find another way.
If we could put Tor into some kind of "idle mode", where it would shut
down all circuit building and other timer-driven behaviour, then it
might be safe to let the device sleep until it was woken by incoming
traffic. We could ask the guard for keepalives, say once every five
minutes, to ensure that periodic tasks like fetching the consensus and
uploading HS descriptors would have a chance to run even if there was no
incoming traffic. But those tasks would still happen in bursts, so it
seems to me that there would still be a risk to anonymity.
We might be able to reduce the burstiness if Tor could tell the
controller the time of the next consensus fetch or descriptor upload,
and the controller could use an alarm to wake the device at that time,
regardless of network traffic. Doze mode adds some restrictions here -
whitelisted apps can set an alarm every nine minutes, which might be
enough. The alarm could also be used to check the time of the last
keepalive, to detect dead guard connections.
I think doing this right is going to require significant input from the
Tor devs, first of all to see what we can safely get away with in terms
of sleep, and then perhaps to implement an idle mode and supporting
controller commands if it looks like a good idea.Tor: unspecifiedNathan FreitasNathan Freitashttps://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/23450Orbot doesn't start on Samsung Chromebook Pro2020-06-13T06:45:15ZTracOrbot doesn't start on Samsung Chromebook ProThe Samsung Chromebook Pro (XE510C24-K01US) comes out of the box with Android support.

Also, Firefox Klar is designed "incognito-by-default". User can clear the result/close the browser by just tap the menu.

Privacy Browser has the option to proxy through Orbot. A user recently brought to my attention that there is a bug in the HTTP proxy of Orbot 16.0.2-RC-1 (downloaded from F-Droid) which causes all HTTP requests to fail. HTTPS requests work fine. Using Orbot in VPN mode works fine as long as Privacy Browser is not trying to proxy HTTP requests through port 8118, otherwise they still fail.
Downgrading Orbot to 16.0.0-RC-2-multi-SDK23 causes HTTP proxying to work correctly.
Testing was performed using Privacy Browser 2.11 on a Pixel 2 XL running Android 8.1.0 (API 27). Privacy Browser can be downloaded from F-Droid, but the current version, 2.11, is not yet available there. It can be downloaded directly from:
https://www.stoutner.com/privacy-browser/changelog/
Versions prior to 2.11 used the old WebView proxying code and do not work with the changes Google recently made to WebView. As such, they are not useful for testing this bug if the device has recently updated WebView.

```
```
Tor Browser speaks directly to socks5 of tor with IPv6 and not over tun2socks vpn translation. That's why you can actually access IPv6 Websites but not for tunneling any other application connection to IPv6.
tun2socks just requires argument:
```
--netif-ip6addr fdfe:dcba:9876::2
```
if
```
fdfe:dcba:9876::1
Disabling VPN mode in orbot re-enables at&t wifi calling. When i try to disable several programs in the vpn mode options to try to isolate which service that wifi calling is using that is getting rerouted out of country over tor, orbot re-enables the vpn mode on those programs so not only cant i use wifi calling in vpn mode, i cant disable vpn mode for whatever program that wifi calling is using to register. This is quite a hassle since i use wifi calling most of the time, and now vpn mode cant be enabled if i want to get or make any phone calls.
Currently the VPN switch and the main switch are mostly independent entities, with the exception of switching on the VPN automatically activates the main switch. While the automatic activation might be useful, it's simpler and less confusing for the VPN switch to act just as a configuration toggle, where it only takes effect when the main switch is on. It might be technically not the case if tor operates independently, but it would probably be a regular user's expectation if they use the Orbot as a standalone vpn (read: censorship circumvent) app.
ps. I can only come up with using it as a kill-switch to justify the current behaviour, but Android now provides Always On VPN so advanced users should be able to use that.Nathan FreitasNathan Freitashttps://gitlab.torproject.org/legacy/trac/-/issues/31975Orbot on Kitkat stuck at "Orbot is starting..." after update. Generally they get along well, since they have different SOCKS and HTTP ports, and android sets up two VPN configurations. As such, I do not see issues with public web traffic. However routing to hidden services only works on one orbot at a time, usually the primary profile. On the other profile, usually work, I get the following tor log line and connection failure within a VPNed app:
WARN: Missing mapping for virtual address [SCRUBBED]. Refusing.
This appears to be caused by the app from the work profile resolving the .onion domain against the personal orbot's DNSPort. I am able to reproduce the failure in the profile of my choosing by setting that orbot to use DNSPort 5401, and the other orbot to use 5400 (the default value). This does not appear to be a hardcoded port issue though, because if 5401 and 5402 are set, one of the two orbots wins and can route .onion addresses while the other still cannot.
Orbot will not go farther than this, won't begin the bootstrapping process
if I reinstall I can get one session, once I close and reopen orbort the above happens again.
using a rooted Acer b1770 tablet with tor alpha.
tor alpha will connect without orbot, just worried about the lack of extra layers.
1) I open orbot, the "start screen" loads fine. It shows the unconnected start-state. The background makes this nice pulsing animation
2) I want to start the service, tap "start"/logo.
3) App crashes. It just disappears the second I click start.
4) I then reopen the app, still it is unconnected of course. I enable the VPN slider. The app instantly crashes (again). Even worse, when I now start it again, it crashes (does not show the start screen anymore, either).
I am on android 9. Lineageos 16.0-20191229-NIGHTLY-beryllium. Kernel 4.9.200-perf-g44bd5bc. I use a pocophone f1.
Cannot use the app now.
If you launch the Tor Browser on Android and don't hit the "connect" button you get a permanent notification that says _"Orbot is starting"_ and the only way to get rid of it is to connect to tor and then exit the whole thing via the Firefox menu.
There should be a quick way to exit the app without connecting to tor and launching Firefox, that's it.
I dont know why this is even necessary as the app store updaters already provide a notification, this doesn't seem to have ever actually notified me about an update, but it sure does let M$ know who all the orbot users might be.
