This patch fixes some build failures on:
FreeBSD RELENG_4, gcc version 2.95.4 20020320 [FreeBSD]
warning: preprocessing directive not recognized within macro arg
Please modify patch as needed and apply if appropriate.
Also, 'make install' rebuilds tor_main.Po, tor_main.o and tor. This
should not happen when called as: 'make ; make install' because
'make' already made them. 'make install' should just pick up and
install all the previously built bits from the build hierarchy.
Lastly, when registering on this bugtracker, the registration link
sent in the registration mail is not https. As with the rest of the
site, it should be as well.
Thanks [for Tor too].

"Warning: Your server (IP:DirPort) has not managed to confirm that its DirPort is reachable.
Please check your firewalls, ports, address, /etc/hosts file, etc."
It was independently confirmed that the port is reachable and this message is wrong.
Setting a different DirPort does of course only alter the message but it still appears.
This behaviour was seen in 28-rc and 2.1.1-alpha under WinXP Pro SP3 (but could be there for some time).
It is right that setting up a DirPort on a bridge is senseless but the Warning is just wrong and should be redone.

1) It's currently the FF2 version, even when running on FF3. This breaks both the browser features that depend on functionality only available in FF3's session store, as well as any extension that depends on that functionality.
2) Even if it's synced up with the FF3 version, it's still bad, because if there is a security issue in nsSessionStore.js fixed in a point release for FF3, users of this extension will still be vulnerable until it is resynced in a new release, which could take a while.
Please find another way to do what you want to do without forking the component.

Workaround is disable torbutton, install cert, re-enable extension.

I use to get to places on our corporate network stopped working. Right-clicking on a link and specifying
'open in new tab' or 'open in new window' opened the tab, but the page was not loaded.
I disabled Torbutton and proper functionality returned. (Except, of course, for Torbutton!)
This is experienced by me on Firefox 2.0.0.14 running under WindowsXP. I am running Privoxy 3.0.6 for Windows,
then tor v0.1.2.19.
I narrowed it down to Torbutton by disabling ALL OTHER EXTENSIONS. The errant behavior correlated
directly with Torbutton extension being enabled. (Firefox was shut down and restarted in between
each test.) This behavior is corroborated by user feedback on the Firefox page for Torbutton:
addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks for a great product. I look forward to
the repaired version and future enhancements!

When I opened Firefox (Version 3 Beta 4) TorButton was disabled by default!
I enabled it, and made sure that Firefox was set up to use Tor / Torbutton and Privoxy! (Tools, Options, Advanced, Network)
I cannot open any web pages, because there is a compatibility issue with Tor / TorButton and Privoxy and maybe even Firefox!
Here was the configurations I used:
Note: address:port
Privoxy used 127.0.0.1:8118
Tor used 127.0.0.1:9050 (Tor / TorButton was configured to use Privoxy, with the above information!)
Firefox was configure: HTTP and SSL Proxy 127.0.0.1:8188 and SOCKS (Firefox said SOCKS 5???)Proxy 127.0.0.1:9050
Fixing this issue allows me to have a safe and anonymous browsing experience!

While tor works with the torrc lines above using Bridges, I'm curious if tunneling dir connections is not working with
tor and bridges? When I use tor without bridge options enabled, the dirconections are tunneled, but I don't know if they
are or not with bridges and this error. I noticed this error in previous versions of tor (rc's) but I haven't reported it
until now, as I was unsure this was a bug and the kind people in #tor @ oftc.net IRC suggested I file a bug about this.

00:40 < goldy> arma2, nickm, any idea as to why?
00:40 < nickm> what version of tor?
00:40 < nickm> reproducible/not?
00:41 < goldy> Windows: 0.2.1.2-alpha and 0.2.0.28-rc
00:41 < goldy> reproducible with those versions.
00:41 < nickm> ah.
00:41 < goldy> 0.1.2.19 and 0.1.2.14 both seem to work alright.
00:42 < nickm> it doesn't have any guess as to what its address is yet
00:42 < goldy> alright...
00:42 < nickm> previous versions learned it from directory headers or from
resolving the address field in the config file
00:42 < goldy> what changed?
00:43 < nickm> it's possible that when we switched to getting directory over
tor by default, we stopped getting useful header info in
directory replies.
00:43 < goldy> this was on a clean install, no cached-* files yet.
00:44 < nickm> seems like a bug.
00:44 < nickm> ah yes, in directory.c:
00:44 < goldy> why do I always find wierd bugs.
00:44 < nickm> if (conn->dirconn_direct) {
00:44 < nickm> char *guess = http_get_header(headers, X_ADDRESS_HEADER);
00:44 < nickm> because your use case is not typical?
00:44 < goldy> hehe, I'm not typical. :)
00:44 < nickm> because you were a windows programmer in a past life? :)
00:45 < nickm> it looks like tor only examines the X-your-address-is header on
a direct directory connection.
00:45 < nickm> this makes a bit of sense, but not perfect sense: that header
should be fine if we're doing an encrypted one-hop connection.
00:45 < nickm> really, though, it should be looking at netinfo cells.
00:45 < nickm> hm.
00:46 < goldy> so your saying that new installs are using a circuit to get
directory info?
00:46 < nickm> 0.2.0.x should do the former, and 0.2.1.x the latter
00:46 < nickm> goldy: Don't you read the changelogs? :)
00:46 < goldy> I briefly looked at it.
00:46 < nickm> new installs get directory information over one-hop connections
by default. To a first approximation.
00:46 < goldy> but didn't see a "yeah, this might break _x_" so I didn't see
it. ;)
00:47 < goldy> so who is the first hop? another hard-coded DA?
00:47 < nickm> first hop in a one-hop circuit? it would be the directory
server.
00:48 < goldy> so it would be like ( me -> DA) or (me -> one_hop[DA?] -> DA )?
00:48 < nickm> yup, verified. if you run with TunneledDirConns off, getinfo
address works again. this is a bug.
00:49 < goldy> ah, OK.
00:49 < nickm> mind if I copy-and-paste this conversation to the bugtracker?
00:49 < goldy> I was wondering why my IP checking program was crashing...guess
I found out why.
00:49 < goldy> not at all.

mv -f .deps/compat.Tpo .deps/compat.Po
it seems to be a well know problem ( https://hardened.gentooexperimental.org/secure/ticket/29 ) due to some laxism in previous glibc and gcc.
Since the code around line 2073 of util.c is just trying to open /dev/null with O_CREAT, i think we can safely remove the flag from the argument.
Morever, if /dev/null do not exist, we should not create it as a simple file, so this is better to abort in case of problem.

handled event-based, but observed by the one second loop in main.c. This
leads to unnecessary delays of hidden-service establishment up to two
seconds together.
While other events like finishing to establish the introduction circuit
in rend_client_introcirc_has_opened() call the function
connection_ap_attach_pending() to proceed immediately, for two events
this does not happen. Therefore the protocol proceeds after the one
second loop has checked, if anything has changed. Depending on when the
event occurs this check can happen anytime between zero and one second
after the event.
One of the two events is the reception of a RENDEZVOUS2 cell in
rend_client_receive_rendezvous().
The other situation containing the bug only occurs if the introduction
circuit is established before the RENDEZVOUS_ESTABLISHED cell is
received. If establishing the introduction circuit takes longer than
sending the ESTABLISH_RENDEZVOUS cell and receiving the acknowledgment,
everything is fine, because as mentioned before the
rend_client_introcirc_has_opened() function initiates further steps. The
buggy sequence of those events occurred in 28 per cent of 1,200 hidden
service access attempts.
To fix this bug the connection_ap_attach_pending() function needs to be
called after receiving RENDEZVOU2 and RENDEZVOUS_ESTABLISHED cells, too.
The bug was introduced in revision 817, when the
connection_ap_attach_pending() function was called in the main loop for
the first time.

[warn] Requested exit point 'barkerjrhttp' would refuse request. Closing.
This is in err, because the router's exit policy explicitly allows exiting to that hostname's IP. However, because it
doesn't allow exits on *:80, it's rejected. Considering that the user thinks that exit will accept it, we should give
it a try even though it returns ADDR_POLICY_PROBABLY_REJECTED.

node when establishing a connection to a hidden service. It was added with revision 1433 in version 0.0.6pre1.
But the configuration option is currently ignored, because it is used in the choose_good_exit_server()
function in circuitbuild.c only. Since cannibalization was introduced in version 0.1.0.1-rc, this method isn't used
for establishing rendezvous and introduction circuits anymore. Now the circuits are selected in the
circuit_find_to_cannibalize() function in circuitlist.c, where pre-built 3-hop circuits are either extended to a known
introduction point or just declared as rendezvous circuit with the third hop automatically being the rendezvous point.
Therefore enabling the the configuration option has no effect on the chosen rendezvous point.

torbutton new version adds a lot of security improvements. But, some of these improvements involve behaviour which might
seem strange at first glance (for example, if you load a page without tor, switch to tor use, you cannot load a link from that page).
Those strange behaviours are documented online at https://torbutton.torproject.org/dev/#FAQ
We plan to package torbutton for debian.
In debian, software documentation is usually placed in a well known location (/usr/share/doc directory).
So, when users encounter those strange behaviours, they will be likely to check for documentation in that location, instead of trying to get some documentation online.
Therefore, we'd like to ship a FAQ or README file inside our package.
So, if you ship a FAQ or README file as part of torbutton repository, that will make things easy for us.
If that's a problem for you, we'll probably just dump https://torbutton.torproject.org/dev/ to plain text.

It would be nice if Torbutton could spoof the clients OS randomly, making it harder for exit notes or websites to take the first step in determining your identity. This could also be standardized as a single "spoofed OS". (as was done with v1.1.14 24 Feb 2008 "spoof an English browser").
The specific Firefox build number was also revealed in the same manner. This in combination with the identification of ones OS, makes it more likely that a pattern could be seen. Especially when someone uses a less common OS. To counter this problem, Torbutton could randomly spoof all the FF version numbers between the first and last build. For instance for FF2, anything between 2.xx and 2.xx.14 and for FF3 in the same way. Or again using one specific build number for all.

for 30 seconds after the last change to the set of introduction points.
However, in an evaluation it was found that in some test cases these
30 seconds were exceeded: In one test case, there was a 34 seconds gap
inbetween two introduction establishments, but without an attempt to upload
a descriptor. In another case, a descriptor was not uploaded until
41 seconds after an introduction point establishment.
An inspection of the log files revealed that the abandoning of an
introduction point *candidate* resets the 30-seconds counter, too, even
though it would have no effect on the uploaded descriptor. Hence, given
that the 30-seconds delay is a useful means to estimate when a descriptor
is stable, the 30-seconds counter should only be reset when an actual
change to the descriptor to be uploaded occurs.
A possible fix is to check whether an introduction point that is given up
was contained in the last published descriptor. Only in that case, the
descriptor should be marked as dirty and the 30-seconds countdown started.
A bugfix is attached below. Backport candidate for 0.2.0.x.

"Remember what I've downloaded" to checked
"Accept third-party cookies" to checked
"Keep until" (under Cookies) to "until they expire"
"Remember passwords for sites" to checked

It's rather annoying, but doesn't cause any serious problems.

Right, that's the same bug that is described in the NLnet mid-June report:
"Descriptor Upload Failures: The current logic to upload rendezvous service
descriptors does not handle failures in a reasonable way. In case of a
failure, Tor waits for a solid hour before making the next attempt. There
should either be a smaller timeout or an individual handling of failures
per directory."
In the mid-June measurements and when using v0 rendezvous descriptors this
bug affected 481 of 3270 cases (14.7 %); only in very few cases it affected
all three hidden service authorities and became visible, because clients
couldn't access the hidden service. In my yesterday evaluations with v2
rendezvous descriptors, this bug occurred in 1298 out of 9460 attempts
(13.7 %). This means we really need to fix this bug to increase
reliability.
The fix you suggested above only avoids those nasty warnings and
unnecessary upload attempts, but it doesn't help to maintain rendezvous
descriptor availability.
My first idea was to put all upload attempts that cannot be performed due
to missing router descriptors in a queue. As soon as new router descriptors
arrive, this queue should be checked, and rendezvous descriptors be
uploaded.
However, this idea does not work. Tor doesn't seem to make any attempts to
download missing router descriptors when it thinks it has enough (I'm not
so sure about its behavior, could you confirm?). In one test case a Tor
providing a hidden service failed to upload v0 rendezvous descriptors to
the three hidden service authorities for more than two hours.
So, my second idea was to request router descriptors as soon as we realize
that we need them and implement the queuing idea, so that a second attempt
will be performed as soon as router descriptors have arrived.

controllers from attaching streams to one-hop circuits. The idea seems to be
that we can use the cost of forking and maintaining a patch as a lever to
prevent people from writing controllers that jeopardize the operational
security of routers and the anonymity properties of the Tor network by creating
and using one-hop circuits rather than the standard three-hop circuits. It may
be, for example, that some users do not actually seek true anonymity but simply
reachability through network perspectives afforded by the Tor network, and
since anonymity is stronger in numbers, forcing users to contribute to
anonymity and decrease the risk to server operators by using full-length paths
may be reasonable.
Whether or not we agree that the particular approach of using hardcoded,
immutable policy in the Tor client to limit self-determinism on the part of
clients is the right way to address the risks posed by one-hop circuit
utilization (for example, I think that routers ought to take responsibility for
ensuring that they are not allowing exit from one-hop circuits), it remains
true that as presently implemented, the sweeping restriction of one-hop
circuits for all routers limits the usefulness of Tor as a general-purpose
technology for building circuits. In particular, we should allow for
controllers, such as Blossom, that create and use single-hop circuits involving
routers that are not part of the Tor network.
There are several ways to address the problem while maintaining the approach of
using hardcoded restrictions in the client code. The simplest solution is to
just have a new configuration parameter that allows the attachment of streams
to one-hop circuits. An objection to that approach might be that the abusive
controllers will simply set the configuration paramter and carry on. Another
solution is to require that we can only exit from one-hop circuits if the
(single) router in the circuit has a descriptor whose associated purpose is not
general. Again, controllers can set purposes on descriptors, or feed the Tor
descriptors via POSTDESCRIPTOR, so controllers could still be abusive, but the
overhead would be somewhat greater.
A third solution is to require descriptors to have a special option that
indicates to the client that they can be used in one-hop circuits, and have
clients object, as they do now for all routers, to attaching streams to one-hop
circuits for routers that do not have this option set. That solution seems to
eliminate the worry about operational router security, since server operators
will not set this bit unless they are willing to take on such risk. If we
worry about the impact on anonymity of the network resulting from including
such "risky" routers in regular Tor path selection, we can just systematically
exclude those.
Tactically, we should do something to allow Blossom to say "yes, I really do
mean to use this one-hop circuit." What is the right way to achieve this in
the short-term?

[12:01:16] <mfr> i can do that
[12:01:24] <mikeperry> you can find old ones in https://torbutton.torproject.org/dev/releases/
[12:01:27] <mikeperry> I appreciate it
[12:01:30] <mikeperry> thanks
[12:04:55] <mfr> Ok i've found were is the problem
[12:05:20] <mfr> It's probably on the spoofing US nav fonctionality
[12:05:36] <mfr> functionality
[12:08:04] <mikeperry> does the issue depend on which tor state the browser starts in?

[12:13:09] <mfr> untedted on ff3
[12:14:23] <mikeperry> how are you choosing the locale in the first place? via environment variable, command line argument, or firefox option?
[12:14:31] <mfr> both in rc5 and 6
[12:14:55] <mfr> it's a standard firefox i think
[12:15:19] <mfr> lang default for french ( fr fr_FR en en_US)
[12:20:37] <mfr> I think that the torbutton dosn't take at the good place in the firefox model is display language value
[22:49:57] <mfr> so what can i do for that ?
[23:55:53] <mikeperry> it could be because torbutton is touching the pref 'intl.accept_languages', but I'm surprised that is being used to choose the UI language
[23:56:02] <mikeperry> I thought it was only for what got sent to websites
[00:08:36] <mikeperry> can you verify if that is the setting causing you the problems?
[09:07:31] <mfr> yes i've seen that torbutton is touching 'intl.accept_languages'
[09:11:11] <mfr> when i desactivate 'US spoofing option' there is no problems. All strings (with existing translation ;-) ) remain translated even if tor is activated

These do NOT get restored on the extension being uninstalled, even if you install, realize you dont like it and
immediately uninstall. If you have del.icio.us installed, installing Torbutton leads to a strange dialog "You have been
logged out of del.icio.us. Please decide whether or not to delete your bookmarks" If you have a GMail window open,
it too logs out. This is extremely disruptive from a user point of view. What is more, removing cookies without asking,
I feel, is a violation of user rights. Accordingly, at the very least, the extension description should be updated to
show a warning explaining this behavior will occur, and workarounds, if any.

It is obvious to me that i don't get to make any decissions here because i'm not part of this project, but the source of this error message was really hard to track down, it didn't mention at all that it was produced by the tor button.
I really wish this gets immediate fixing, because it makes firefox look unstable when it is acutally a tor button error.

Torbutton is configured to disable plugins. With Torbutton enabled I go to
www.youtube.com and click some random clip. As expected, it complains about
that flash is missing. I disable Torbutton and reload the page, but the
complaint remains. Re-entering the address in the same tab won't work
either, and clearing the cache does nothing.
However, if I open a new tab and copy-paste the same address into it, that
works. This new, "good" tab can happily co-exist with the old, "bad" tab,
which stays bad, unable to load flash. So this seems to be tab specific.
Even if I choose the bad tab an go back to www.youtube.com and again choose
some random clip (or the same one, even by re-entering the address) flash
won't load. The only cure for the bad tab seems to be to visit another site
and then go back to some youtube clip. Weird stuff.
This is with Torbutton 1.2.0 (not available yet under "Reported version").

This happens when I have the add-on v1.2.0 (the final one, and with the previous release code versions) enabled + FF v3.01 on windows XP with javascript disabled. If I disable the add-on it works fine.
I understand this functionality might be relavent when I have the tor button turned on and I am using it, but not when I have it turned off and am not using it.
I have to completely disable the add-on for my FF browser to function properly.

Since I cannot think of any instance whatsoever that I would wish for Java to be enabled while using Tor, this is especially frustrating. Related issues have been closed as "not a bug", but I respectfully disagree : The TorButton should not enable Java if I have specified that I do not want Java enabled.
I am using Torbutton 1.2.0 (fully updated as of today), Firefox 3.0.1 (fully updated as of today), and Windows Vista Premium on an HP DV8000US laptop.

everything to rfc1918 space for this note.
fxp0:
inet 10.0.0.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255
inet 10.0.0.2 netmask 0xffffffff broadcast 10.0.0.2
I fire up a statically compiled tor in a chroot populated with the
minimum required to keep tor quiet:
/etc/resolv.conf
/dev/urandom
I exec tor while already under a dedicated non-root user/group.
I use the following addressing options:
-socksport 9050 -sockslistenaddress 127.0.0.1
-controlport 9051 -controllistenaddress 127.0.0.1
-orport 9001 -orlistenaddress 10.0.0.2
-dirport 9030 -dirlistenaddress 10.0.0.2
Note that my packet filters have proper holes for Tor.
========================================
As you can see, the OR and DIR binds honor the requested use of the
secondary address. Yet the udp and outbound connections bind to the
primary address on the interface.
# before outboundbindaddress
tor tor 55099 4 tcp4 10.0.0.2:9001 *:*
tor tor 55099 5 tcp4 10.0.0.2:9030 *:*

tor tor 55099 11 stream tor[55103]:12
tor tor 55103 9 udp4 10.0.0.1:3093 w.x.y.z:53
tor tor 55103 12 stream tor[55099]:11
So I added this to the config:
-outboundbindaddress 10.0.0.2
Now you can see that this was indeed honored as well. And we are
now left with only the udp binds to deal with. However, I can see
no configuration option to do that.
So that is missing feature #1.
# after outboundbindaddress
tor tor 82854 4 tcp4 10.0.0.2:9001 *:*

========================================
Now note that _both_before_and_after_ outboundbindaddress, Tor seems
to be confused regarding its socket allocation as noted below.
Therefore it never publishes its descriptor and I have 384kbits
still sitting useless :-) :-(
So that is bug #2.
[n] Tor v0.2.0.30 (r15956) ... (FreeBSD i386)

[w] Your server (10.0.0.1:9030) has not managed to confirm
that its DirPort is reachable. Please check your firewalls, ports,
address, /etc/hosts file, etc.
========================================
Lastly, I think the pairing of:
-<Whatever_function>Port Port
-<Whatever_function>ListenAddress IP[:PORT]
is a bit klunky. In that the pure Port statement is required to
enable the function. But if you also want to bind it somewhere
deterministic you _also_ have to specify the Address IP. And some
functions may be useful to bind more than once in the future. So I
would perhaps see about moving to this style instead:
-<Whatever_function>ListenAddress "{IP|*|#}[:PORT]"
Where '*' means bind to all addresses. And perhaps '#' might refer
to however the current pure Port statement picks its addresses
currently.
========================================

Yes. And it should have the facility to bind to whatever address I
tell it to use for that purpose. Not the primary address on any
given interface, the '*' address, etc. Tor already has facilities
for its OR and DIR 'listeners' and the 'outboundbindaddress'. It
needs one one for DNS resolution as well. I don't want it using .1
for that. Create a -dnssrcport and -dnsbindaddress. -dnssrcport
should allow >=1024 for non-root and anything for root, particularly
53.
Note that Tor still performs some tor related DNS queries even if
it is: 'reject *:*'. Otherwise there would be no need to bind udp
in that case.
>> [w] Your server (10.0.0.1:9001) has not managed to confirm
> Because tor can't confirm 10.0.0.1 is a valid non-rfc1918 address.
No. As with w.x.y.z:53, I have protected the innocent for this note.
In your mind, do the reverse and replace every instance of 10.0.0.0/24
above with one publicy routed /24 cidr block while preserving the
last octet. Then it is clear that something is wrong. I have bound
OR, DIR and the 'outboundbindaddress' to .2. It thinks otherwise.

Tor 0.2.0.30 stable version was released officially a few days ago, but upon upgrading or uninstalling/reinstalling, the following messages always showed up 100% of the time.
Aug 03 19:44:21.798 [Notice] Tor v0.2.0.30 (r15956). This is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity. (Running on Windows "Longhorn" Service Pack 1 [workstation] {terminal services, single user})
Aug 03 19:44:21.936 [Error] Error from libevent: evsignal_init: socketpair: No error
First of all this should not be experimental software since it is a stable release, and how come I am unable to start Tor especially when the "error" is actually "No error"?

http://archives.seul.org/or/talk/Aug-2008/msg00010.html
It seems that in some cases we build a one-hop circuit to a server without putting its onion key in the
extend_info. This happens _at least_ when we don't know any onion key for the server, because we are
connecting to it for directory information and we don't have any descriptors yet.
You can test this yourself: run with -FastFirstHopPK 0, with a new empty datadirectory (to avoid cached data),
and with no other options set.
The right fix is probably to override should_use_create_fast_for_router so that it uses a create_fast cell
for one-hop tunnels when no onion key is known, even if FastFirstHopPK 0 is set.

This could lead to a point where too many users try to use one single bridge at once.
Because there is currently no user limit or similiar, all users will only get a small bandwidth from the bridge.
Currently there is no way for a bridge to tell connecting clients to use another bridge
because it has too many users to provide a certain bandwidth.
The amount of possible users (at any given time) is depending on the RelayBandwidth of the bridge.
Be aware: This proposal does not mean setting a bandwidth limit on the bridge, this is already possible.

these exit enclaves to just be exit enclaves, and not be routing other tor traffic through them as an intermediary.
I want to contribute to the tor network by routing tor network traffic, providing a bridge and an exit node, but I prefer
to separate these logically and topologically in our network and not bundle them together. This is especially true
because I've got multiple services in the same rack that are all configured identically that I would like each to
exit enclave for their services that they provide to the public, but not each individually be routing tor traffic as
intermediaries.
I would like to route tor traffic for others, but on a different box (and on a different network in some cases), but
not when I am exit enclaving.
