Find common logic spread across three documented patches in Mozilla bug report #565965. Analyse and consolidate to a single patch.

Final delivery

Rebase according to the most timely (!#565965) Firefox ESR release to facilitate testing, and finally rebase according to the Tor Browser in preparation to play with it and see how it behaves for us.
