GTalk connection doesn't work when "less secure apps" is turned off

A while back Google offered a security feature to disallow logins from applications using login technology deemed "less secure" (see [1] and [2]). Apparently, Tor Messenger doesn't use what Google deems "secure" login technology (for the record, neither does Adium).

It would be good if Tor Messenger supported the "secure" method of login, or otherwise explained why it would be acceptable to turn "less secure authentication" on in Google's configuration. GTalk is widely used, and it would be beneficial to support it in its most secure configuration.
