Can't use OSX firewall in 10.4

Is the firewall necessary when using tor? When trying to set up Tiger's firewall I get an error message that Imust turn of the fireewall already running. I have cleaned out BrickHouse and HoneyPot, so Tor seems to be the only thing left. Help!? Thanks
