recent update to 7.5 on portable version breaks browser

On windows server 2008r2, I deleted IE and the related web platform (IIS, etc.) to reduce the attack footprint. I browse from portable Firefox (quantum) without issues for the most part but some websites are too cumbersome with its current configuration and tor worked adequately for those until this latest update. I created a fresh portable directory and updated the browser from the tor menu. When it restarts, it fails to connect to the control port. What has changed in the update to lose this connection handshake and is there a workaround? A screenshot can be provided upon request. I returned to the prior version for the time being.
