Plan for increase in CiviCRM email send rate

Fundraising has requested an email speedup, and we (at Giant Rabbit) would like to test increasing CiviCRM's send from 500 per 5 minutes to 5,000 per 5 minutes. CiviCRM has been sending the mails via postfix on crm-int-01, so that's where the rate would be increasing. We'd like to pilot the new settings on the February newsletter.

Does this sound reasonable? Is there other planning that ought to take place?
