git over https broken?

When trying to clone git over https, I get an error message "warning: remote HEAD refers to nonexistent ref, unable to checkout."

Unauthenticated git works fine.

Possible solution would be to run git update-server-info resp. run "chmod +x .git/ hooks/post-update". (see https://groups.google.com/group/github/browse_thread/thread/7dcc5f23019ecaba )
