Tor Browser crashes on startup

Tor browser 2.2.35-8-osx-i386 crashes instantly on startup - the vidalia control panel never appears. Machine is a MB 2.2 GHz intel core 2 duo running 10.5.8 (Tor browser is installed on external usb stick) . Tried the same bundle on a MBP running 10.6 which worked fine. What might be the problem?
