apply for .onion gTLD at IANA
getting gTLD at IANA eventually enables hidden services to obtain a free, signed, valid ssl certificate from startssl or any other (non-)free, signed, valid ssl certificate from certificate issuers.

Component: - Select a component to Tor Sysadmin TeamOur sysadmin team should not interpret Runa's assigning this ticket to them as confirmation that we actually want to do this.
Last I checked, it costs six figures in icann protection money to get a new gtld. Sounds pretty silly.

Milestone: N/A to Sponsor Z: November 1, 2013who said anything about using ICANN registrars? There are at least four other TLD providers. Granted ICANN has the monopoly right now.
how sure are we that our internal .onion never leaks and will never hit a TLD .onion, say if some black ops/organized crime org bought .onion from ICANN.
.onion was not applied for in the new gTLD program. http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/application-results/strings-1200utc-13jun12-en
The next time the opportunity will come up is in a couple years. This is good, because maybe they'll have the kinks worked out then.
