Vidalia hangs and consumes 100% cpu during initialization

I have just installed the latest version of the Vidalia bundle on my fresh install of windows xp sp2. When ever I try to start the application it just hangs and consumes all available processor memory, and the Vidalia Control Panel window turns white forcing me to kill the proc with taskmanager. I waited several minutes assuming that it may indeed be my old Pentium 3 slowly creeping along, but the application never freed up the memory and failed to properly initialize
