I don't think this is likely to help, but theoretically it's possible.
Trying to eliminate differences from my faster local runs on a 12-core
machine.

gitlab output collapses multiline commands and provides no way to
uncollapse them.

I suspect these are also getting mangled somehow,
because e.g. packages don't appear to be getting installed.
