Using a browser selector alongside TB/MB

There has been some discussion about the problem with setting Tor Browser as default: it could create a linkability issue. A possible solution would be before loading the page, asking the user which browser they want to use.

There are multiple "browser selector" existing software for all platforms (See below).

Interestingly, this could also be viewed as an alternative (short term or additional) way of fixing the "persistent mode" problem, by automatically launching another browser of choice for specific websites. I'm wondering if that could be integrated with TB/MB, before the browser itself is launched, but also what are the implications in terms of the different threat models.

Existing features:

  • configurable default browser per URL (hostname, regex, etc.)
  • configurable browser list
  • start a browser with a specific profile / in private mode
  • automatic removal of tracking parameters
  • make links from a specific software always open in a specific browser
  • redirect detection (HTTP/DNS)/ expandshort URLS, ahead of browser selection
  • as a browser extension: send/open with another browser
  • open specific links in specific apps (teams/zoom)
  • Add an option to only ask if they are multiple browsers running
