Feature Request: Maintain a Standalone "Base Browser"
Dear Tor Project Team,
this is a feature request for the Tor Project to consider maintaining a standalone, downloadable version of the Base Browser, which currently serves as the foundation for both the Tor Browser and Mullvad Browser. This standalone version could provide significant benefits for users who are looking for a robust, privacy-focused and security-hardened browser.
Why not Tor Browser? Yes, Tor Browser is great but for some tasks users still want or need to a clearnet browser.
Why not Mullvad Browser?
- Features specific Mullvad branding, therefore not vendor-neutral. Includes a default homepage and browser extension specific to Mullvad.
- Users are mistakenly believing that the VPN is active by default because the browser name contains the name of a well known VPN company.
- usability:
- No stored logins: Does not save logins because Mullvad Browser does not save cookies after a browser restart. Therefore, users would have to log in repeatedly.
- No password manager: Does not come with a password manager by default. Users would need to re-enter their passwords for pages where they intend to use logins repeatedly.
Why Base Browser? No telemetry, security hardened by default.
If such a base browser was maintained as a binary, easily downloadable / installable version, it would most likely become the default browser of Kicksecure. (A derivative of Debian, a Linux distribution I am working on.)
