Guard against failures during MAR file generation

We tried to guard against errors during the MAR file generation by using set -e in the respective scripts but that is not working our particularly well as those scripts are using bash errors as features (see: legacy/trac#26216 (moved)). We should think about a better way to achieve what we want.
