but that's not enough: we also need some GitLab CI logic here to trigger the right build when the right branch gets pushed. i don't quite know how to do this, because i'm not sure what the logic is.
@emmapeel could you clarify the spec here? is that some workflow thing like what we used to have in the gitlab-ci.yml? something like this:
```
workflow:
rules:
- if: $CI_PROJECT_NAME == "support"
variables:
TRANSLATION_BRANCH: "support-portal"
- if: $CI_PROJECT_NAME == "manual"
variables:
TRANSLATION_BRANCH: "tbmanual-contentspot"
- if: $CI_PROJECT_NAME == "community"
variables:
TRANSLATION_BRANCH: "communitytpo-contentspot"
- if: $CI_PROJECT_NAME == "tpo"
variables:
TRANSLATION_BRANCH: "tpo-web"
```
... but in reverse, that is a logic like: "if we are on branch support-portal, trigger the support build"? not sure how that would actually work in the yaml file... maybe with a variable?
something like this maybe?
```
workflow:
rules:
- if: $CI_COMMIT_REF_NAME == "support-portal"
variables:
TRIGGER_PROJECT: "tpo/web/support"
deploy:
stage: deploy
trigger: $TRIGGER_PROJECT
when contributors are translating a website, if they have a preview available their translations are better, they self-learn and are closer to the web development process, giving out solutions for problems they encounter or reporting bugs.
so we have this translation 'staging' site, where they can see the locale they are translating. this is a lektor very similar to the one in production, but i also add more languages to its configuration and sometimes delay the content a bit whenthe strings are not ready for translation.
currently, we have this setup:
- one branch in each lektor, called `translations`, i.e. https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/web/community/-/tree/translations
- special versions of the 3 configuration files we need to edit to add new languages on the branch
- once in a while i merge the content changes from the master branch on it, generate a new translation file, and commit
- transifex checks that file twice a day and updates their system.
- when new translations arrive, they (used to) trigger a build on https://lektor-staging.torproject.org/community/translations/ with all those extra languages. so if you are translating you can see your changes on the website like 2 hours later.
what i want to do now is build the translations branch dynamically:
- have a gitlabCI job (a version is available at https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/community/l10n/-/blob/main/ci-templates/lektor-with-more-langs.yml)
- this is triggered by pushes to https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/translation/, for example for the community branch by adding this gitlab-ci.yml file to the branch: https://gitlab.torproject.org/emmapeel/translation/-/blob/communitytpo-contentspot/.gitlab-ci.yml
- when a change comes from transifex (or weblate in the future), the changes on the community portal trigger the lektor job, and a build:
- checkout `main`
- overwrite with special config files hosted on this repo
- generate the staging site and the translation file
- when i am happy with the state of the strings, i can commit the i18n/contents.pot file somewhere where transifex (or later weblate) will pick it. maybe on the main website, as a submodule.
> (i want to be able to audit the strings before they go to translation, because otherwise many times we make translators translate several small deviations from the same strings, which is really boring. since i practising gatekeeping, i got positive feedback from the translators about finding 'real strings' to translate. other things i do is to try to translate strings when they have changed small details like an end period, or a change of link, so the translators that speak that language can concentrate on the real content to translate, and dont need to retranslate the same string only because the link has changed.)Sponsor 9 - Phase 5 - Usability and Community Intervention on Support for Democracy and Human RightsJérôme Charaouilavamind@torproject.orgJérôme Charaouilavamind@torproject.orghttps://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/community/l10n/-/issues/40047Process for localization decisions on a per-language basis2022-07-26T20:04:18ZemmapeelProcess for localization decisions on a per-language basisAs the participation of translation contributors is many times not simultaneous, there is a problem when taking decisions about how to translate terms to each language.
We need a process to be able to build a list of accords, and how to negotiate changes on them if you disagree. SOme decisions are blocked because 'This has been decided long ago' or 'It has always been like this', but the person that decided that is not active anymore.
We have a partner, Localization Lab, that helps us coordinate this work with volunteer translators all around the world.
As part of the objective 1, we will automate how training material text is funneled into the localization portal. Right now, localizing training materials demands a very manual process that takes lots of staff time to move content into the translation platform used by Localization Lab volunteers. We want to automate this process so that we can translate training materials much faster, and maintain or change the translated versions more easily. In this Objective, we will build tools to do so.
The tools will
1. Automatically get the strings to be translated from mardown training materials (in https://community.torproject.org/training/resources) into Transifex.
2. Automatically get the strings translated from Transifex and build the slides in pdf/odp published translated to the different languages into our community portal (in https://community.torproject.org/training/resources).Sponsor 9 - Phase 5 - Usability and Community Intervention on Support for Democracy and Human Rightsemmapeelemmapeel2021-03-11https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/community/l10n/-/issues/40074finish community portal translation to Russian2022-07-27T18:02:23Zemmapeelfinish community portal translation to Russianwe need to translate 1697 strings (26726 words) to finish the translation of the community portal to russian.we need to translate 1697 strings (26726 words) to finish the translation of the community portal to russian.Sponsor 125: Rapid Response Fund for Russia censorship circumventionemmapeelemmapeelhttps://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/community/l10n/-/issues/40069Update translation for support portal in Russian2022-05-24T17:45:04ZemmapeelUpdate translation for support portal in RussianWe need to have the support portal updated, as lots of content has been added.
