How to reach a translation accord
---------------------------------
When a contributor wants to propose a translation for a specific term:
- Defines the decision and opens a forum topic in https://forum.torproject.net/c/feedback/localization-feedback/8, and maybe adds a comment in https://forum.torproject.net/t/language-accords-style-and-other-decisions-about-translations-for-each-language/88
- It is important to have an official place to have the discussion, and document this place elsewhere.
- All contributions should be bound by the Code of Conduct.
- The proposal should be about **ONE** term / decision, in **ONE** language. Otherwise the stakeholders grow exponentially and it is hard to reach a decision.
The proposal should have:
- original term
- current terms being used when translating, small review
- an argumentation of why the term proposed is better than the others
- We start a process of gathering input, the bottomline being to do whatever is more agreeable by the users, of course staying in line with core values. Also, don't forget that some choices also bear political connotation - ie the formality/respect/bourgeois civility, gendered language, etc..
Stakeholders:
- All translators for that language that have translated Tor Project materials (reachable at https://www.transifex.com/otf/teams/1519/discussions/ )
- Tor Project: UX, community - they may have some conditions for a term, for example: 'do not translate Onion Browser', or 'try to maintain an informal tone of communication if possible'.
- community team: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/community/l10n/-/issues
- Other projects that also use Tor terminology (Tails, Guardian Project, etc)
- it would be nice to contact them, but it may delay the process. depends on how close they are to the term
- We give time to give input on the forum.
- [ ] TODO decide how much time we give for the different stakeholders to express their opinion
- What to do if we don't find a consensus? Some stakeholders may veto a decision (for example, if we cannot change a term because of legal reasons).
- If we don't find a consensus, we call a meeting to discuss further.
- After a decision has been reached, we document it here, in the translation platform glossary, and add a translation note to the term in the [Tor Glossary](https://support.torproject.org/glossary/) if there is an entry for it. |
