FOSSASIA 2025, March 13-15 in Bangkok
The sequel to the 2024 Hanoi FOSSASIA is happening in mid March 2025, and it has now been announced to be in Bangkok March 13-15.
The call-for-speakers is open now too, with a deadline of December 11 or 12 (depending on timezones).
My last year's talks in Hanoi went well, in that I met a bunch of people, they were happy to have me there, and at the last minute they tried to add me to a bunch more sessions once they realized what was going on. I think we should take that momentum and do it again, especially since the conference will be in a new country with a substantially new audience to reach.
The timing is good from my perspective, because I will be at Rightscon a week and a bit before, and the CloudFest conference will pay for my flight to Germany on March 16.
I plan to offer them another broad 25 minute "what is Tor" talk (which last time got turned into a 45 minute slot the night before, which was really critical), but also I plan to coordinate with the organizers to see what else they would like to include me in. I think Thailand is a little bit more accepting of an environment in terms of Tor talks, and also I have some locals that I can turn to for advice on where the lines are.
The call-for-speakers also mentions that they are happy for us to have a booth (complimentary). Last year Guardian Project had a booth, Open Culture Foundation had one, Free Software Foundation Europe had one, etc. But I would not want to do a Tor booth unless we have more Tor people there. Maybe Ebanam wants to join (and organize the booth, or do a joint booth with Guardian Project) since it is sort of nearby? Whether expanding our FOSSASIA presence is a good idea depends on other factors like our broader comms/outreach strategies though.
