UX INTERVIEW [after survey] draft - for Tor Relay Operators to understand their motivations for running Tor Relays
This interview draft should focus on understanding and filling in gaps from the user survey hosted here: https://survey.torproject.org/index.php/459487
Tasks:
- Ask what can be done to better support relay operators and promote community.
- Ask what works and what keeps them motivated.
- Ask what felt missing in the survey that they would like to talk about.
This survey is part of the gamification project for Tor Relay Operators - Mapping values and motivations of the Tor network
Our goals with this project are to find ways to meet these goals (and more):
- Promoting network diversity
- Attracting more + faster relays
- Promoting operating system diversity
- Building a trusted relay community
Interview Draft:

- How did you get involved with Tor?
- What other projects have you volunteered for before?
- How has your general volunteering experience been outside of Tor?
- Have you tried running relays or something similar for non-Tor organizations? How was your experience?
- Have you heard about projects that incentivize node operators with tokens or cryptocurrency? What do you think about this idea?
- Do you have cryptowallets attached to your relays? (from oniontip)
- What has been Tor's most effective communication channel? Where/when have you felt the most seen/heard?
- What kind of activities do you expect at meetups going forward?
- Are/were you a part of a relay organization? If yes, how different is/was your relay running experience in a relay organization (compared to running relays as an individual)?
- Would you like to recruit more people into your relay organization?
- Have you heard about the Contact Information Sharing Specification? Do you think relay operators should adopt this specification? Are you applying this spec in your relays?
