Meskio mentioned in IRC that he didn't see any issues with gettor, so I think the issue is with nagios
The "AUTHENTICATIONFAILED" string isn't from nagios trying to connect to gettor-01, it's gettor-01's statusfile in /srv/gettor.torproject.org/check/status
@anarcat do you know what nagios is doing to create that statusfile?
