# Metrics Timeline
2

3
An incomplete timeline of events that might affect [Tor Metrics](https://metrics.torproject.org/), to aid in the interpretation of data and graphs.
4

5
https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/network-health/metrics/timeline
6

7
Some entries represent singular point events; some are time ranges with a beginning and an end; and some are ongoing ranges that have begun but not ended yet.

The **places** column uses [ISO 3166-1 country codes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1#Current_codes).

17
18
The **?** column indicates whether an entry is tied to a known real-world event. An "X" in the **?** column means that some significant change is visible in the data, but no cause for it is known. If you know the cause, fill it in and remove the "X".

Blog post: [How to contribute to the Tor metrics timeline](https://blog.torproject.org/contribute-to-tor-metrics-timeline)

23
1. Register a Tor GitLab account at https://gitlab.torproject.org/users/sign_in.
24
2. Open a [new issue](https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/network-health/metrics/timeline/-/issues) for each event, with all the necessary information: start date, end date, places, protocols, description, links. If you know how to clone the repository and make a branch, you can open a [merge request](https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/network-health/metrics/timeline/-/merge_requests) instead. Use the `tidy` script to make sure the syntax is correct.
25
26
27
28
29
30

Things you can do:
* Find an event with **end date = ongoing**, find out if it has ended by now, and insert the correct end date.
* Find an event with **? = X** and try to find a news event that could explain the change in the graphs.
* Go through one of the [other data sources](#other-data-sources) and ensure that all its events have been imported.

34
## Helper maintenance scripts

The `tidy` script sorts the database and canonicalizes formatting.

The `scrape-geoip` script builds table entries from the history of geoip databases in tor.git. Geoip entries last updated 2021-08-19.

The `md2csv` script extracts the database and outputs it as CSV.
```
