However, it would be great to supplement this quantitative research with qualitative interviews to help us reach underrepresented demographics from the global south.
In addition to asking select questions from the VPN Discover Survey, we should also seek to understand their use-cases for using VPN-style products and what features they would consider essential for the MVP.
To achieve this, we'll need to:
### Recruit participants
- [x] Create a screening survey (en/pt/es)
- [x] Analyze survey
- [x] Recruit willing participants
### Conduct the interviews
- [x] Draft an interview script
- [x] Gather feedback and review interview script
- [x] Schedule and confirm interviews in english, portuguese and spanish
- [x] Conduct the interviews within Q2 and Q3
### Report the results
- [x] Transcribe and translate (when needed) the interviews
- [x] Analyze interviews & Write a public report
- [x] Incorporate our findings into the user stories/product requirements where applicable

We should also take the opportunity to ask any additional questions we felt were missing from the Discovery survey, and gain a deeper understanding of our users if needed.
To do so, we may employ a second survey, host a workshop, conduct a series of interviews with end-uses – or employ a modest combination of these approaches.

Non-technical users don't understand that Tor works connecting through at least 3 relays.
**Why is it important:**
From this lack of understanding of how the browser actually works, there are many problems that could be resolved. For example:
1. some users don't understand the configuration screen
2. others encounter different kinds of problems during their use of the browser, such as:
- slow loading times
- pages in different languages as they would normally encounter
- websites that don't work in Tor Browser
**Recommendations:**
Solving this issue could take many different directions. But we must somehow explain to them how they will be accessing the internet in a completely different way. We could:
- Show them how they are connecting to the Tor Circuit (in the connection screen)
- Show them the Tor Circuit in the "about" page once they have successfully connected.
- Explain how Tor Browser would make their browsing private in the Download Page.

**Why is it important:**
Users are not sure as to **why the connection failed**. They might think is their internet connection. Or something weird happened.
In [2019 Tor Browser Design document](https://2019.www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser/design/#philosophy), states how crucial is to "_Preserve existing user model_". And although I question the limits of what should be the user's mental model in accessing the internet with Tor Browser in the [-Make Tor Circuit more visible issue-](https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/ux/research/-/issues/34), at the end of the day they are using a Browser. We must find a way to explain the user why they can't access some websites while using our design. Just as we explain why they can't access a made up url [screenshot].
**Recommendations:**
- Although this is something we can't change, perhaps we can display a message to users as to why they have this error.
- We could find a way to tag the error and create an error message specific to it.

For the most part, the options are placed in the order it's most useful to try them in:
1. Select a built-in bridge
1. obfs4
2. snowflake
3. meek-azure
2. Request a bridge from torproject.org
3. Provide a bridge manually
However we don't communicate that explicitly to the user.
The redesign conducted in https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser/-/issues/41080 also attempted to improve the UX by tidying away the inputs into separate dialogues, and by has provided extra space for descriptions to accompany each bridge option within the dialogues themselves. I think it would be worthwhile reviewing the descriptions added for built-in-bridges, looking for potential improvements, and to consider adding similar descriptions to the request a bridge and provide a bridge dialogues.Sponsor 30 - Objective 3.5https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/ux/research/-/issues/78Conduct and report Q2 2022 user research in Brazil & Mexico2022-09-30T20:05:35ZNahConduct and report Q2 2022 user research in Brazil & MexicoWe are running Usability Testings on Connect Assist (Tor Browser Desktop) with Brazil and Mexico users (S30). We worked on improving the Tor Bootstrapping UX by embedding Tor Launcher UI in Tor Browser. We are not detecting censorship yet nor suggesting Bridges automatically; users who need it will still configuring Network Settings manually.
The goal of this research is:
`Understand users pain points with this new user flow`
`Inform the next iteration of this flow which will include censorship detection and automatic bridge suggestion`
`Collect bugs reporting`
## Audience
We want to collect feedback from regular users, in regular and censored context.

# User Research Plan
## Goals
We aim to understand what's our user needs when using a VPN, and what products that they've been using to meet their challenges at the moment. Our second goal is to understand how much of privacy, security and anonymity they need and their willing to risk by using a VPN with other products than the Tor Browser.
## Audience
Regular Tor users, specially Tor Browser for Android users.
### Recruitment
We will use Tor Browser banner to recruit participants for this research, social media channels, such as Twitter and reddit.
## Methodology
We will use a survey to run this research, in our self-hosted LimeSurvey, with closed questions in two screens.
## Activities
**Demographics**
Our traditional demographics ask questions regarding gender, age, uses of Tor, need for privacy and security, and expertise in tech.
Additionally, we want to know if our users use VPN, if they use it with Tor, with every service online, and how much they use. We also want to understand how they chose their vpn, if it is FOSS, if it is paid, if they have and use more than one vpn, and if they had abandoned a VPN before. We will ask which VPN they use.
**User needs**
We want to understand how much they need privacy, security and anonymity, and what are the risks they are willing to take to use a VPN with other services.
### Description
### Suggested Time
This survey will take between 5-10 minutes to be answered.
#### 1.Introduction to the session
Welcome!
This is a research to better understand Tor users' needs to privacy, security and anonymity when using other services outside of the Tor network. A public report will be released in the UX team gitlab repository.

##### Second screen - User Needs
Tor is a program you can run on your computer that helps keep you safe on the Internet. It prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Generally it is impossible to have perfect anonymity, even with Tor. Tor does not protect all of your computer's Internet traffic when you run it. Tor only protects applications that are properly configured to send their Internet traffic through Tor.
Q5 **Would you prefer to use a browser that covers your needs in terms of security, anonymity and privacy or a VPN that has the some of these features?**
[ a browser ] [ a vpn ]
Q6 **If a Tor-powered VPN was available for your cellphone, would you still use Tor Browser?**

Q7 **Are you aware of the risks of fingerprinting when browsing the internet?**
[ yes ] [ no ] [ I'm not sure what fingerprinting is ]
If yes, **Would you use a Tor-powered VPN with third-party apps that don't fully defend against fingerprinting?**
[ yes ] [ no ]

At minimum, we need to:
1. Conduct a competitor analysis
2. Determine which Tor Browser design requirements will still meet the needs of VPN users (https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser/-/issues/40564)
3. Consider followup questions to our demographics script to gain a deeper understanding of our user-base
4. Dig into use-cases and know what features our users value most from a VPN
5. Test messaging and brand terms
6. Potentially test ideas around fundraising/monetization
Let's begin by pulling together an unstructured list of all the questions we need to ask and group them by subject/relevance, before deciding on the best research and recruitment methods to get answers for each "bucket".
In terms of timelines, I'd like to launch our first study/studies in mid-late August, with an aim to have some preliminary data by September. The full timeline for all research will run until the end of December.
In order to make the reporting as efficient as possible given our tight turnaround times, we should consider closed-ended questions wherever possible.Sponsor 101 - Tor VPN Client for AndroidNahNah2021-08-18https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/ux/research/-/issues/42Reinstate link on the toolbar2022-04-11T19:40:17Zkulsoom.zahrakulsoomzahra24@gmail.comReinstate link on the toolbarEarlier versions had a link on the toolbar to http://check.torproject.org. After a user installs a new language for their browser, the browser asks if they want to solicit the sites they use in that language they just installed. They can either accept or deny to do so [see screenshot].
**Why is it important:**
Accepting to solicit a different language than english would potentially threaten their privacy as explained in the screenshot.
**Recommendations:**
- If we want to make our best efforts to protect users privacy, I think we must dismiss this choice to the users and just keep asking for the sites in English. This would keep their privacy intact of trackers that might identify the user based on their language choice.
- If this is not an option, then, I think we could improve the writing of the warning as it's confusing to users.

Potential users doubt if the "[Download](https://www.torproject.org/download/)" Page is indeed where they can download the Tor Browser.
**Why is it important:**
After potential users have decided to click on one of the results of their Search Engine. _They were **still confused** if they were on the Download page of Tor Browser_.
The problem stems from the lack of reference of being a Browser's download page. We are only shown to "Defend yourself." But we should expand on what is this page about.
**Recommendations:**
- Add the word "Browser" in the page title.
- I think is worthwhile to think of other ways to display this page, and not just add a word.
- I'd recommend to check how other browsers do this: [Firefox](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/), [Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/), [Brave](https://brave.com/download/), [Vivaldi](https://vivaldi.com/download/).

**Recommendations:**
