**Problem:**

Users may not be able to access a website while using Tor Browser. This is not something new, as it's explained [here](https://support.torproject.org/censorship/censorship-2/), [here](https://support.torproject.org/tbb/tbb-30/) and [here](https://support.torproject.org/connecting/connecting-1/).
**Why is it important:**
Users are not sure as to **why the connection failed**. They might think is their internet connection. Or something weird happened.
In [2019 Tor Browser Design document](https://2019.www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser/design/#philosophy), states how crucial is to "_Preserve existing user model_". And although I question the limits of what should be the user's mental model in accessing the internet with Tor Browser in the [-Make Tor Circuit more visible issue-](https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/ux/research/-/issues/34), at the end of the day they are using a Browser. We must find a way to explain the user why they can't access some websites while using our design. Just as we explain why they can't access a made up url [screenshot].
**Recommendations:**
- Although this is something we can't change, perhaps we can display a message to users as to why they have this error.
- We could find a way to tag the error and create an error message specific to it.

After a user installs a new language for their browser, the browser asks if they want to solicit the sites they use in that language they just installed. They can either accept or deny to do so [see screenshot].
**Why is it important:**
Accepting to solicit a different language than english would potentially threaten their privacy as explained in the screenshot.
**Recommendations:**
- If we want to make our best efforts to protect users privacy, I think we must dismiss this choice to the users and just keep asking for the sites in English. This would keep their privacy intact of trackers that might identify the user based on their language choice.
- If this is not an option, then, I think we could improve the writing of the warning as it's confusing to users.

Non-technical users don't understand that Tor works connecting through at least 3 relays.
**Why is it important:**
From this lack of understanding of how the browser actually works, there are many problems that could be resolved. For example:
1. some users don't understand the configuration screen
2. others encounter different kinds of problems during their use of the browser, such as:
- slow loading times
- pages in different languages as they would normally encounter
- websites that don't work in Tor Browser
**Recommendations:**
Solving this issue could take many different directions. But we must somehow explain to them how they will be accessing the internet in a completely different way. We could:
- Show them how they are connecting to the Tor Circuit (in the connection screen)
- Show them the Tor Circuit in the "about" page once they have successfully connected.
- Explain how Tor Browser would make their browsing private in the Download Page.

Potential users doubt if the "[Download](https://www.torproject.org/download/)" Page is indeed where they can download the Tor Browser.
**Why is it important:**
After potential users have decided to click on one of the results of their Search Engine. _They were **still confused** if they were on the Download page of Tor Browser_.
The problem stems from the lack of reference of being a Browser's download page. We are only shown to "Defend yourself." But we should expand on what is this page about.
**Recommendations:**
- Add the word "Browser" in the page title.
- I think is worthwhile to think of other ways to display this page, and not just add a word.
- I'd recommend to check how other browsers do this: [Firefox](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/), [Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/), [Brave](https://brave.com/download/), [Vivaldi](https://vivaldi.com/download/).

Potential users doubt if the "[Tor Project | Download](https://www.torproject.org/download/)" Page is indeed where they can download the Tor Browser.
**Why is it important:**
If people search "Tor Browser" in their preferred search engine, the meta data showed to them should state that the download page is for a Browser. For example, a participant said: "I went with the first option that appeared, assuming is the correct one". This should be explicit for all potential users.

>>>
This meta data causes doubt to potential users and their goal: to download a browser.
**Recommendations:**
- Change the Page Title to "Download - Tor Browser"
- Change the Description: I'm not sure why we use this space as a pledge to users: "do not torrent over Tor". We should rather explain the main goal of TB and how they will benefit with a more secure browsing.
