Build a database of users who consent to participate in research activities

I'm dumping here some thoughts we shared with @donuts during my 1:1 today.

It would be great to have a database of Tor users who are happy to be contacted to participate in user research activities, so we don't have to go hunting for users every time we need feedback for smaller qualitative studies.

Where we could get these contacts from?

  • @nah had gathered some contacts.

What do we have left from that? @donuts

  • @sajolida has a database of contacts from Tails that he shared in https://nc.torproject.net/f/679614.

Are we fine reusing these contacts for research on other Tor products?

  • @sajolida suggested adding a optional contact question to the Tor Browser survey (https://gitlab.torproject.org/groups/tpo/applications/-/milestones/15)

It might be sensitive to add (even optional) email addresses to this survey depending on the other questions.

We should screen people again anyway before inviting them to another study (at least to check their availability), so we don't need to know a lot about their demographics from the Tor Browser survey.

  • How might we benefit from the work of the Community Team to gather such contacts?

The work from the Community Team might be particularly useful to filter contacts based on the target countries of Project 163, which is funding most of @alicia's work.
