tests: further prep for pernickety details testing

We're going to want to test a variety of expansions with a variety of drivers. tests/expand/ won't work because of #13 (closed). So I'll do this with directly. Hoist some stuff out of the reference examples checker.

I have a nascent branch which can run particular tests; this is a prefix of that.
