apt-get install tor vidalia results in defunct Vidalia

  1. Add Tor (stable) repository. According to https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian-vidalia.html.en.

  2. sudo apt-get install tor vidalia deb.torproject.org-keyring

Tor will be automatically started. Then start Vidalia manually. Will fail.

Jun 19 18:59:07.986 [Warning] Could not bind to 127.0.0.1:9050: Address already in use. Is Tor already running?
Jun 19 18:59:07.988 [Warning] /var/run/tor is not owned by this user (user, 1000) but by debian-tor (110). Perhaps you are running Tor as the wrong user?
[Warning] Before Tor can create a control socket in "/var/run/tor/control", the directory "/var/run/tor" needs to exist, and to be accessible only by the user account that is running Tor. (On some Unix systems, anybody who can list a socket can connect to it, so Tor is being careful.)
[Warning] Failed to parse/validate config: Failed to bind one of the listener ports.
[Error] Reading config failed--see warnings above.
Tor v0.2.3.17-beta (git-8b7adb27cb77d600) running on Linux
(Ubuntu Precise)

Imho it's really tricky to make it work and I haven't found documentation regarding that use case. There are only related posts http://www.noobrescue.com/blog/vidalia-detected-that-the-tor-software-exited-unexpectedly.

To upload designs, you'll need to enable LFS and have admin enable hashed storage. More information
