apt-get install tor vidalia results in defunct Vidalia
Add Tor (stable) repository. According to https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian-vidalia.html.en.
sudo apt-get install tor vidalia deb.torproject.org-keyring
Tor will be automatically started. Then start Vidalia manually. Will fail.

Jun 19 18:59:07.988 [Warning] /var/run/tor is not owned by this user (user, 1000) but by debian-tor (110). Perhaps you are running Tor as the wrong user? Tor v0.2.3.17-beta (git-8b7adb27cb77d600) running on Linux (Ubuntu Precise)
Imho it's really tricky to make it work and I haven't found documentation regarding that use case. There are only related posts http://www.noobrescue.com/blog/vidalia-detected-that-the-tor-software-exited-unexpectedly.
