[Discussion, feature request] Ignore HTTPS for onion services
In 10.0 (based on Firefox 78 ESR), Extended Validation green bars were removed and user must click the padlock to see EV registered organization. Most users will not be doing this.
All other major browsers removed this feature too, so usage of Extended Validation is declining. On other hand, they introduced warnings when website is not secure (not using HTTPS).
Some users might be scared of "insecure" onion services because do not see https in their address bar. On other hand, unnecessary encryption layer slows down both the onion service servers and its users browsers (which also need to verify CA and CT logs).
I suggest either normally redirecting users to HTTP version (note "insecurity" issue however) or doing it silently (so user will see https in their address bar, but transferred data will not be double-encrypted).
This issue will be more important in near future, because all major browsers will eventually use HTTPS by default, making most onion services not working if http not specified.
