High CPU load after tor exits unexpectedly

It the tor process exits unexpectedly (from Tor Browser's perspective), then the Firefox parent process starts doing something that causes very high CPU usage. This continues after tor is restarted.

The torbutton and torlauncher logs do not indicate any specific action related to the controller (but it's probably something in there).
