Questions about Startpage's privacy and performance for a Q&A session with their engineers
Startpage has agreed to host a presentation and Q&A session about how Startpage works. These questions come up in our our conversations about evaluating search engines. It would be good to know more about this before we do things like dynamically updating about:tor
with the users' default search.
Please help me develop a list of questions! @richard @donuts @micah @isabela CC: @pavel
List of questions so far:
- What are their privacy polices?
- How do their privacy protections work?
- What's their agreement with Google (they serve Google results), how does that work re: privacy?
- How does ad serving work re: privacy?
- Clicking on results doesn't send info to Google or Bing -- but what about clicking on ads?
- Do they have other ways of earning profits, and if so, how do those methods impact users?
- We have feedback about the Startpage experience for Tor users at Safest because of Javascript, how willing are they to make improvements for Tor users in that regard?
