about:home search is broken

In Tor Browser, the search feature of Mozilla's about:home page does not work. Clicking the Search button does nothing. There are multiple problems:

  1. Mozilla uses LocalStorage to pass info about the default search engine to about:home. They only set the info once (during browser "first run") and since the Tor Browser does not write LocalStorage to disk the info is lost.

  2. The about:home search code does not support engines which use POST (Startpage is configured to use POST).

Should we remove about:home from the Tor Browser? Should we fix these problems (probably not too difficult now that we know what they are)?

To upload designs, you'll need to enable LFS and have an admin enable hashed storage. More information
