User research findings

During the usability tests of Tor VPN 0.6.2 (tpo/ux/research#69 (closed)), several participants tried bridges providers that didn't work given the network conditions. For example:

  • bridges.torproject.org was censored as well when Tor was blocked.
  • 5/6 participants tried the Telegram Bot when Telegram was blocked.

One participant suggested hiding the options that won't work.

More in general, we're not helping people choose the best bridge provider though some are usually much easier to use.

Ideas

  • Could we check whether bridges.torproject.org is reachable before displaying it as an option?
  • Could we check whether Telegram works before displaying it as an option?
  • Should we encourage all users to try to bridge bot first and only display the other options as fallback or more advanced?
