This reverts commit beeae331.

This patch was done because it mistakenly assumed that the read was
inherently broken.  It only broke because of the incorrectly added
echo statements in the previous commit.  That will be fixed next.

don't read the checksum using the built-in read command, it inserts a ^M that breaks shasum
