memory usage warnings on corscicum

frequently getting warnings like this on corsicum:

SWAP CRITICAL - 0% free (0 MB out of 1023 MB)

it looks like this in grafana, in the last 6 months:

snap-20210526T204606

preeetty busy...

i also remember this is a problem karsten was working on before he passed away... :/ his latest status (in private email) was:

Date: Sat, 05 Dec 2020 22:56:05 +0100 [...] The (newly introduced) issue might be that we're not closing a Java stream when checking whether a directory is empty and can be deleted. This didn't came to my mind as being necessary, but maybe it is.

I just deployed a possible fix on corsicum, with colchicifolium still running the version before making this change.

happy to forward the actual thread as well. IIRC, @acute was in CC at some point as well, FWIW...

normally if this was on our regular cluster i'd be happy to bump you up to 16GB of RAM and bump the swap, but this is in an openstack cluster at sunet and i'm not exactly sure how to operate things there.. there's a magic button to "resize the instance" but i'm worried about breaking things there so i'm a little hesitant in going nuts with it until i get a go from you.

/cc @irl

thanks!
