backup the switch configuration and propose a simple solution for configuration management

do a backup of dal-sw-01.torproject.org ... somewhere. possibly just on the bacula storage server? to make sure we can recover if the switch dies.

consider pros and cons of a few options for configuration management including:

  1. manual configuration through the web interface, manual backups
  2. manual configuration through the SSH interface, manual backups
  3. 1 or 2 with RANCID backups
  4. puppet? e.g. dellemcnetworking module, consider what happens when network goes down and puppet is unreachable
  5. ansible?
  6. fabric / mitogen?

I actually tend to favor fabric here, now that i think of it, but i'd like to hear your thoughts. I also couldn't figure out how to do a quick config dump with copy running-config as the completions offered didn't give me something like "console" i could just copy paste.

oh, and i'm not sure the running config is saved! that should probably be done urgently.

so, checklist:

  • ASAP; ensure running config is saved
  • short term: manual backup
  • mid term: propose config management option

feel free to split mid-long term in a separate ticket.
